Another summer holidays have been and gone, so it’s nearly time to say hello to cool air and crunchy leaves. If you’re stuck for things to do to keep the family entertained this autumn, here’s our list of five days out and places to visit that are sure to please all (and they just happen to be in listed buildings too).

Adventure babies at Harewood House

Running from Monday 11 September through to Monday 23 October, Grade I-listed Harewood House is kicking off the Autumn term of “Adventure babies”. These are sessions that consist of sensory play, captivating stories, and music that will ignite imaginations and create a nurturing and stimulating environment for baby development.

Harewood House is a country house in the heart of Yorkshire and is one of the Treasure Houses of England. You can book your visit here: Adventure Babies at Harewood – Autumn Term – Harewood House

Broomstick training at Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle in Northumberland is probably best known as “Hogwarts” from the first two Harry Potter movies (you can read our article about listed buildings in film and TV here). If you and your little ones are fans of Harry Potter, we can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend this Autumn than learning to fly a broomstick on the very spot that Harry had his first lesson too.

Plus, while you’re there you’ll get entry to the Grade I listed castle and grounds to explore and learn some fascinating history. You can learn more about what to expect at your broomstick training here: Try Broomstick Training | Alnwick Castle.

Halloween Week at Muncaster Castle

Grade I-listed Muncaster Castle is holding a Halloween festival from 21 to 29 October, which should coincide with the majority of half-term holiday weeks across the UK. Starting at 10:30am, the day is filled with family-friendly activities including costume competitions, castle tours, and twilight owl displays that go right through to 7pm. There’s something for everyone to enjoy and it’s a great way to learn about a beautiful piece of history.

Potion Making at Oxford Castle

Oxford Castle is a large, partly ruined Grade I-listed Medieval castle in Oxfordshire. The connecting prison closed in 1996 and has been redeveloped into a hotel and visitor attraction.

This October half-term they’re hosting a “ghost fest” with a range of activities available for the whole family. The resident Warlock is inviting you to come and create some creepy concoctions, right in the heart of the castle. There are also spooky tours of the castle available for the bigger kids – if you’re brave enough!

Halloween at Warwick Castle

If you’re looking for an autumn getaway, grade I-listed Warwick Castle is a great destination for adventurous families looking for a short break. You can stay over in their “Fright’s village” from £80pp and enjoy a weekend of seasonal activities including braving the castle after dark, learning about the legend of Trebuchet, and visiting the castle dungeons.

Warwick Castle is full of history and a mini-break is the perfect, fun way to learn about it all. Start planning your trip here: October Half Term Breaks | Warwick Castle (warwick-castle.com).
