Easter egg hunts for the kids at listed properties

Egg hunts this Easter

We may only have just put the padded jackets, scarves, and gloves to the back of the wardrobe, but the early Easter holidays are approaching. And that means for many families, planning some days out to keep the kids entertained and engaged with Easter egg hunts and trails. We’ve selected some of our favourites from across the UK which are bound to be egg-xactly the thing for kids of all ages.

1. Blenheim Palace, Easter Eggstravaganza, Oxfordshire

As this runs across the Easter weekend only, from Friday March 29 – Monday 1 April, we suggest you better hop to it with this cracking day out for kids. Within the walled garden there will be a host of “egg-cellent” fun stuff to get involved with, including balloon modelling, bubble performances, circus skills, dress-up, fairground rides, and an old-school variety show. And of course, the star of the show, the Easter Bunny, will be around and about. There’s also an Easter egg hunt, and for those who want something other than chocolate (Hotel Chocolate will also be on site), you can refuel on a slice or two of wood-fired pizza from the Walled Garden pizzeria.

Find out more about Blenheim’s full spring and Easter holiday agenda – including the unmissable Adventure Play – and buy tickets here.

Walkworth Castle, Alnwick

2. Easter Adventure, Warkworth Castle, Alnwick Northumberland

We love this egg hunt because you don’t have to book in advance, and it’s just an extra £2 to take part on top of the general castle entry price (you can save 15 per cent if you book full entry online in advance). Participants get to channel their medieval hunter/warrior and hunt for clues all over the castle grounds and are then rewarded with something of the chocolate variety. It’s running throughout the Easter holidays and once the kids are done with the treasure trail, there’s plenty to discover and explore around the grounds. You may even catch some falconry or a jousting tournament.

3. Easter Adventure, Audley End House and Gardens, Saffron Waldon, Essex

There are more Easter eggs and clues to track down at Audley End this spring. Running from Saturday 23 March to Sunday 14 April, this treasure trail also delivers some tasty chocolate treats within the castle grounds. This is also just £2 to take part on top of a general ticket price, and you can get 15 per cent off your general entry ticket price when you book online.

And if younger family members are more into building construction than chocolate destruction, why not take them along to The Big Brick Build? – A LEGO® group challenge where young fans can create super structures alongside some master builders.

And if your kids want to have a go at the Easter LEGO® brick build but Audley End isn’t in your area, it’s also running at Belsay Hall and Castle, Northumberland, Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire, Cover Castle, Kent, Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire, and Osborne House and Estate, Isle of Wight.

Pendennis Castle, Falmouth Cornwall

4. Easter Adventure and Quest, Pendennis Castle, Falmouth, Cornwall

There’s more track and crack clue-busting and chocolate eating down in Cornwall over the Easter holidays. As with our other venues, it’s just £2 to take part on top of the entry price, and no booking is required.

Please don’t just go for the Easter egg hunt though; the castle and buildings have history and adventure in every step and stone. This lookout point over the Atlantic, originally built by Henry VIII to look out for possible invading forces, tells many a tale of seafarers, sailors, pirates, and soldiers. And the grounds are the perfect place to explore and walk off all that Easter chocolate.

5. Easter Egg Trail at Osterley Park, Chiswick, West London

This Easter egg hunt is all about having fun with nature while still hunting for clues and chocolate. Taking place from 27 March until 14 April, and set across the stunning gardens of Osterley Park and House, this truly is a treasure trail and a half. For just £3, participants are kitted out with a sheet of clues and bunny ears, before being rewarded with a dairy, vegan, or Free From egg. And aside from the egg search, there are also some traditional games going on such as hoop-la and welly-wanging. Once the hunt is over, why not explore the main Georgian manor house, take a cycle ride, or do some den building. It’s all there to enjoy this springtime and Easter.

6. Easter Egg Trail, Waddesdon Manor, near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire

Much like the egg hunt at Osterley Park, the trail activity is just £3, and participants are kitted out with a sheet of clues and bunny ears, before being rewarded with a dairy, vegan, or Free From egg.

The Waddesdon adventure really makes the most of its awesome setting. Participants begin at the North Front of the Manor following clever clues across the grounds before collecting that prize egg at The Coach House.

And you can make a fun day of it without venturing into the big house; the refurbished playground and food outlets mean nobody will get bored or hungry!

While we can’t confirm arrangements for what the weather decides to do around Easter, we hope that our list of events and days out around listed and historical properties provides plenty of ideas for days out.
